Searching for a connection to Richard Farrant, born Richard Pope (Poppe?) on 21 Dec 1888 in London? England. He apparently went to live with the Farrant family as a child or young man and took their name and went with them or by himself w/wife, Eva Waterman to Canada. My mother, Ruby Farrant, was born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on 6 Feb 1919. There was an older son, Thomas Farrant, presumed to also be born in Canada, and a younger son Alfred. They were living in Detroit, Michigan, USA in the 1920's, and moved to south Florida in approx 1931 after my grandfather lost his business in Detroit.(My mother said she was 12 when they left Detroit). Some few year later they moved to Pensacola, Fl where my grandparents ran a Tourist Court (cabins that were pre-runners of motels) until my grandfather's death in Oct 1979. Trying to find the Farrant family my grandfather went to live with, and find out if they were relatives of the Pope's (Poppe). Also trying to locate the ship he was on to Canada. He had a Canadian Pension from the Canadian Army? that he received until he died, but have been unable to locate records for that either.

Martha, although I don't have Sarah listed myself, I feel it likely that she does branch off of my family due to the location and the year of her marraige.
There are several families that I have that she could have possibly belonged too, but I'll just let you know of the most likely.

The first is that she could be the daughter of Mark Farrant (1714-1801) and a Miss Quick. Mark owned properties including Lemonshill, New Cottbarton, and Dunns Green. Miss Quick inherited Culmpine Manor from her Uncle.

Culmpine - Kelly's directory gives the spelling as Columb-Pyne. It used to be in Clayhidon Parish.
Listed in bible as Lemons Hill, Devon Gazetteer calls it Lemonshill, a farm in the Parish of Hemyock.
Dunns Green, as listed in bible, exists in the Devon Gazetteer as Dunsgreen, a farm in the Parish of Clayhidon.
Ad extract from Western Flying Post or Sherborne and Yeovil Mercury -
1776 11 Nov Farrant Mark - tenement sale Hemyock manor (Note: I think that the term "Hemyock manor" is referring to a manor in Hemyock, rather than a manor named Hemyock. I beleive the manor Mark had for sale here was Culmpine Manor, the property which his wife inherited, which no family record exists of after that time.)

The second, and more likely parents of your ancestor Sarah, is that she is not Mark Farrant's daughter, but his granddaughter.

Mark had two children that I know of, a daughter named Margaret who married her first cousin, Robert Farrant, the son of Mark Farrant's brother John Farrant. And a son named John who was a Captain in the Yeomanry.

This is much more likely, as although we don't have any firm dates on these people yet, Mark was born in 1714, so probably would have been in his sixties when Sarah was born. So in all probability Sarah was the daughter of Margaret, John or an unknown sibling.

Margaret inherited Lemonshill from her father when he died in 1801, and probably at least one other property, Dunsgreen, as it was in the possession of one of her great grand children years later.

I see no property passed on through Mark's son John, possibly because the position of Captain would have been a commissioned office, he would have had to pay dearly to obtain the rank. If his father had payed for him to obtain the commission, he may have felt that John was deserving of nothing further. Or, possibly John had inherited property but sold it to obtain or retain the commission.

Unfortunately, not many records exist of the female members of that time, the only real reasons that Margaret is remembered is that she was a landowner, and married a relative who seemed to have also been well to do.

Of course it's quite possible that Mark had other children I don't know about yet.

Several of the reasons I beleive Sarah is descended from Mark, are number one, the Clayhidon connection, second, that she and her husband chose to give their son William the name Farrant as a middle name, indicating perhaps some measure of respect for an influential family, which Mark certainly seemed to be.

And thirdly, that Sarah and John Merson were married in 1802, the year after Mark's death. If she had been the daughter of one of Mark's children, his death and their resulting inheritance would have made it more financially feasible for them to bear the costs associated with marrying off a daughter.

I hope that we can confirm or disprove this in the future, either way it's nice to hear from you and to add a few more names to the list.

Martha Merson Frost, November 16, 1998.
