EAST COKER DRAWING 1677
|
Geoff Hallett of Ontario, Canada made this drawing available to share with others belonging to the Wessex Plus and Bristol and Somerset mailing lists and I am posting it here for all who are interested to enjoy. I'll add a guestbook here in the future for anyone who may want to comment on the drawing. Here's Geoff's explanation : |

While looking at a microfilm of the General Register for East Coker, Somerset, { LDS # 1526552 item 22 ] I came across a full page drawing. This was on the same paper as the parish record book as ink had come through from the other side of the page and the corner of the drawing was torn off showing the page below. From the entries either side of the drawing it was made in 1677 and is a very crude picture of a man in a smock who appears to be wearing gaiters and plus-fours. He has a flat trilby-type hat, long flowing hair and a walking stick. His horse, which looks more like the Loch Ness Monster, is almost off the page and is notable for the two saddles. |

Is drawing in parish record books a common occurrence? Also is it surprising that it survived and was not removed from the book by a serious minded cleric. I thank the LDS photographer for including it and giving me more pleasure than finding a date for yet another distant relative. If others have found similar records would they be interested in sharing them? |
